It stands for Value Analysis and Value Engineering\u2014two closely related methods that have been used for decades to systematically improve products without compromising functionality or quality.\n\nIn practice, however, there is often uncertainty about what VAVE actually means, how a VAVE workshop is conducted, and why many companies struggle with its implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origins and Core Concept<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roots of VAVE date back to the 1940s, when General Electric engineer Lawrence Miles (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_D._Miles\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_D._Miles<\/a>) searched for equivalent but more cost-effective alternatives for components during material shortages in World War II. What began as a practical response to scarcity evolved into a discipline of its own: systematically examining what function a product or component actually needs to perform\u2014and how that function can be delivered in the most cost-effective way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between the two terms is primarily a matter of timing: Value Engineering is applied during the development phase, before a product enters series production. Value Analysis examines existing, production-ready products to identify optimization potential. In practice, the two terms are often used interchangeably, which is why the combined abbreviation VAVE has become widely established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core principle remains the same in both cases: value is defined as the ratio of function to cost. A component that performs its function equally well but at a lower cost provides greater value\u2014regardless of whether the improvement is achieved through changes in material, manufacturing, or design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a Traditional VAVE Workshop Is Conducted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A VAVE project typically follows a structured process that spans several workshop sessions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, the product or assembly is broken down into its individual functions\u2014a process known as Function Analysis. Each function is identified, evaluated, and linked to its associated costs. This often provides an initial indication of where optimization potential exists: certain functions may account for disproportionately high costs without providing corresponding value that the customer actually perceives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the next step, an interdisciplinary team\u2014typically involving Engineering, Procurement, Production, and Quality\u2014generates ideas for how individual functions can be achieved more cost-effectively, more simply, or with less material. These ideas are then evaluated, prioritized, and developed into concrete actions.\n\nThe process concludes with an implementation plan that defines clear responsibilities and estimated cost-saving potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where VAVE Falls Short in Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well established as the methodology is, its practical implementation often presents challenges. Function Analysis is frequently carried out in Excel spreadsheets or on whiteboards, with the results disappearing into folders after the workshop. Ideas from previous projects are difficult to find or transfer to new products. And because cost data is often stored in separate systems, teams lack immediate feedback during the workshop on how significantly an idea will actually affect overall costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result: many promising ideas are discussed during the workshop but are never systematically followed through. As a consequence, the real value of VAVE\u2014continuous, documented improvement across multiple product generations\u2014is lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Role of Digital Tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is precisely where the digitalization of VAVE comes into play.
